Justin Ries & Tristen Usher Combine on Five-Hit Shutout; Damien Picks Up 2-0 Victory Over Liberty in National Classic

Baseball:

Damien defeated Liberty (Peoria, Arizona), 2-0, in Tuesday’s National Classic.

The Spartans improved to 10-4-2 in spite of being out-hit, 5-2.

Two DHS pitchers combined on the shutout.

Justin Ries went 5 1/3 innings and scattered three hits.

Ries issued one walk and struck out six.

Tristen Usher earned the save by getting the final five outs.

Usher allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one Liberty batter.

Max Charles singled and doubled for the Lions.

Isaiah Nava, Gerardo Gonzalez and Sebastian Galvez had one hit apiece.

Noah Pringle got the loss.

He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks over three innings.

Tyler Daley singled and eventually scored on an error in the second inning to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

With one out in the third, Julian Hines walked, and he’d score on a Jett Hernandez sac fly.

Daniel Serna had a third-inning double to account for Damien’s other hit.

Up next: The Spartans play Wednesday morning at 10 at El Dorado High with an opponent to be named.
