Boys Soccer:
When the Monrovia boys soccer program meets up on April 10th for their banquet, they’ll have a number of reasons to celebrate the 2022-23 season.
The Wildcats played a very competitive nonleague schedule, and despite finishing third (5-3-2) behind South Pasadena and La Canada in Rio Hondo League play, Monrovia outscored its opponents by a margin of 22-7.
MHS Coach Andrew Barajas started a young team with lofty goals, and they finished with an overall record of 13-8-3.
Although they didn’t advance as far as they had hoped in the CIF-SS playoffs, including a heartbreaker to Colony in OT, the Wildcats will be a force in the Rio Hondo League for the next few years.
Sophomore forward Micah Maljian earned the RHL Offensive Player of the year accolade, and he led Monrovia in goals (10) and assists (8), while receiving first-team all-league honors.
“I don’t remember the last time an underclassmen won this award, and it was great to see the other coaches recognize him,” Coach Barajas said.
In addition to boasting the Offensive Player of the Year, Barajas is also proud to present the Rio Hondo League Defensive Player of the Year to junior Rogelio Anguiano Torres.
Rogelio anchored a defense that only gave up seven goals in a very competitive league that included last year’s state champs from Temple City.
“I asked a lot of Rogelio and he was always asked to shadow some of the top RHL players, and he certainly earned his recognition.
Rogelio also contributed on the offensive side of the ball with two goals and two assists, and was selected first team all-league.
“Those two awards were great achievements, but I am more excited about the next few years. We not only competed for league this year, we made CIF with a lineup that started a lot of underclassmen with some key seniors. I have known a lot of these boys since elementary school and am excited they are finally here. If they commit to working hard, play unselfish and be good teammates, I believe they can accomplish some lofty goals next season”
This past season, MHS started sophomores Micah Maljian, Adrian Sanchez, Jeremiah Botros, Elisha Himsel, and freshman Adam Cao.
Mix in the junior leaders Rogelio Anguiano Torres, Gioavanni Lechuga, Hunter Craig, Izaack Ramirez, Luis Hernandez, Gavin Ford and Jayden Sanchez, and this could be a team to watch next year.
“We will miss this senior class as they were amazing players and cornerstones the last few years,” Barajas said.
