Baseball:
Charter Oak opened Valle Vista League play with a 5-1 victory at Covina.
The Chargers got three runs in the top of the seventh to pull away.
Declan Bowers went six innings and allowed three runs on four hits for CHS.
Bowers walked three and fanned five COHS batters.
Charter Oak got two runs off Brandon Chavez on two hits and a walk.
Diego Ortiz went 2-for-3, with a double and a game-high four RBIs.
Samuel Morales singled, had an RBI and scored twice.
Daniel Hirota walked twice, singled and scored.
Anthony Vasquez went three innings and allowed just an unearned run on two hits.
Vasquez didn’t issue a walk and struck out seven Colts’ batters.
Andres Ortiz and Chris Gonzalez provided two innings of scoreless innings apiece.
Neither walked a batter and Gonzalez got half of his outs via strikeout.
Max Rendon singled and had the Colts’ lone RBI.
Anthony Cordova, Jesse Hernandez and Noah Echeverria had one single apiece, and Jaime Lopez scored.
Up next: The Chargers host the Colts on Saturday morning at 10.
