Baseball:

At the midway point of the 2023 season, this St. Francis squad really seems to have turned the corner as a program.

After Thursday’s 4-3 Mission League victory over Loyola, the Golden Knights have already won three more games (9) than all of last year, and that includes two more (6) in league play.

And SFHS still has 11 more Mission League games remaining on their schedule.

Loyola led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, on Thursday at the Glendale Sports Complex.

But St. Francis would answer with one in the bottom of the first and third innings.

And the Golden Knights scored a pair of fourth-inning runs for what turned to be enough to edge the Cubs in the first of three with Loyola.

Caleb Thatcher got the win, allowing three runs over four innings on five hits.

He walked one and struck out five.

Lucas Favretto and Xander Douglas would combine to go three scoreless innings of relief.

Adam Magpoc went 2-for-4 and scored.

Augie Lopez walked, doubled and had an RBI.

Matthew Lee doubled and drove in a run.

Walter Urbon singled and scored for the Cubs.

Carson Chavez singled and had one RBI.

Nate Stern got the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits over 3 1/3 innings.

He issued a pair of walks and fanned three Golden Knights.

John Calmette’s two-run fourth-inning single turned out to be the game winner for St. Francis.

Brody Royle and Kalani Quiroz singled and drove in one run apiece.

Jordan Lewallen scored twice for the Golden Knights.

Thatcher helped his own cause by walking and scoring one run.

Up next: The Golden Knights travel to Loyola today (Friday) at 3:30.
