Baseball:
Rio Hondo Prep claimed victory No. 1 of the 2023 season on Tuesday.
The Kares defeated El Monte, 13-2, in a five innings.
RHP got five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
Anthony Hernandez got the win, going four innings and allowing a pair of unearned runs on two hits.
He walked one and fanned five Lions’ batters.
Ryan McCulloch closed out the win with a scoreless fifth inning.
McCulloch, who heads to Berkeley in a few months, got two of his three outs via strikeout.
Hernandez was his own best friend on Tuesday.
He went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, scored twice and drove in three runs.
Josh Tafflinger had a big day with three singles, four RBIs and scored three times.
McCulloch walked, singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.
Josh Curtis went 2-for-2, including a double, RBI and three runs.
Elijah Gavia walked, singled and had one RBI.
Yanick Diaz singled and drove in a run.
Nate Curtis walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
Diego Householder singled and scored.
Ivan Tkach walked and had one RBI.
Up next: The Kares will host Poly today (Wednesday) at 3:15.
RHP moved the game up a couple days from Friday in the hopes of getting it in before a strong weekend storm.
