Boys Basketball:
Damien entered the 2022-23 season having to replace all five starters from the state championship team of a year ago.
And the Spartans finished an impressive year at 26-6, including a second-place showing in the Baseline League standings.
On Tuesday, Mira Costa ended the DHS season with a 49-41 victory in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.
The Mustangs used a 13-6 advantage in the fourth quarter to edge the Spartans.
Damien’s offense scored just 13 points in the second half.
DHS junior, Xavier Clinton, had game highs in points (16) and 3-pointers made (5).
Nate Garcia finished a remarkable sophomore season with 10 points.
Will Householter led Mira Costa with 15, and Preston Ezewiro had 12.
Householter scored nine fourth-quarter points, including going 7-of-9 from the free-throw line in the final period.
Eli Garner chipped in with seven points and Lucas Arrieta had five.
