Two of the San Gabriel Valley’s power programs met up Saturday in the 2023 season opener.
Bonita edged visiting Northview, 2-1, as Justin Santiago threw a complete game.
Santiago allowed just one run on three hits.
He didn’t issue a walk and struck out 11 batters.
Santiago needed just 79 pitches to get the job done, and 62 were strikes.
Of the 24 batters he faced, Santiago threw first-pitch strikes to 17.
Joey Alcon singled and scored for Northview.
Sal Batres singled and had NHS’ lone RBI.
Justin Hernandez singled to account for the rest of the Vikings’ offense.
Batres went the first four innings and was saddled with the loss.
He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks.
Jacob Ramos and Kiki Villegas provided one scoreless inning of relief apiece.
Neither issued a walk, and Ramos struck out one Bonita batter, and Villegas fanned two.
Andrew Alva singled and drove in a pair of runs.
Diego Vazquez and Tyler Holley both singled and scored.
Up next: BHS and NHS will both be in action on Wednesday.
The Bearcats are in tournament play, and the Vikings host Montelbello.
