When people talk about the 2022-23 Flintridge Prep basketball program, the first name that comes to mind is Princeton-bound senior Ashley Chea.
But the Wolves would not be 17-2 overall and 4-0 in Prep League games if not for the amazing contributions of freshman Maddie Smith.
Smith averages 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots per game.
Her rebounds and blocked shot totals are tops for Flintridge Prep.
This past week, and after nearly two weeks off, Smith had 16 points and six rebounds in a loss to Village Christian.
Two days later, the Wolves would meet up with the defending Prep League champs, and that same Pioneers program that snapped Flintridge Prep’s 72-game league winning streak, as well as their eight-year ownership of the Prep League penthouse.
FP made a huge statement, thumping Providence, 66-27, on Friday.
In that win, Smith had a monster game with 32 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.
And thanks to a Rio Hondo Prep victory over Poly, the Wolves stand alone atop the Prep League standings.
This is how her coach, Jayme Chan described Smith and her role/impact:
Said Chan: “Flintridge Prep Freshman Maddie Smith has a bright future ahead of her and is definitely making her presence known. Maddie’s elite scoring ability on all three levels makes her difficult to defend. Her point total thus far is 339 points in 19 game, a 17.8 point per game average. Maddie is making the most of her time with senior teammate Ashley Chea, a McDonald All-American Nominee, and someone who is headed to play at Princeton University in the Fall of 2023. She has been the recipient of many of Ashley’s 114 assists on the season. They are indeed a dynamic duo!”
