Football:

Often times, the road to a championship includes a potential season-ending challenge that must be conquered.

And such was the case for the Diamond Bar High football program.

The Brahmas were locked up in a 14-14 tie late in the second half with visiting San Dimas.

The Saints’ Julian Vigil picked a DBHS pass, and SDHS would find itself in a 4th-and-2 scenario in their own territory.

With 41 seconds to play, San Dimas coach Mark Holman elected to go for it, and the Saints were stopped.

Just 15 seconds later, Diamond Bar quarterback Ryan Lewis connected with Maddox Bernardino on a 34-yard TD pass to give the Brahmas a 21-14 lead.

As they always do, San Dimas fought back, and attempted to force overtime.

But Bernardino played the role of hero, picking off a San Dimas pass and running around long enough to see triple zeroes on the scoreboard.

DBHS got out to a 7-0 lead, when, on a 4th-down play, Isaiah Young would score on a 46-yard TD run.

Brian Freeland would get SDHS even with his 8-yard scoring run with 4:44 to play in the second quarter.

After Young sprinted in from eight yards out, Brian Jackson’s 20-yard TD run sent the Saints and Brahmas into the locker room with a 14-14 tie.

Both the SDHS and DBHS defenses would hold the other scoreless in the second half until Bernardino’s catch with just seconds remaining.

Up next: The Brahmas will host Laguna Beach on either Friday or Saturday.

The Breakers (10-3) defeated Norte Vista, 42-35, in their D-9 semifinal.
