Boys Athlete of the Week:
At the beginning of this past week, San Dimas was just two wins away from earning the school its first-ever CIF-SS (Division 5) boys water polo championship.
The first roadblock was a semifinal round showdown at Buena Park.
The Saints cruised to a 10-4 victory on Wednesday, and that set up Saturday’s title-game contest with Don Lugo at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine.
SDHS controlled throughout to claim an 11-6 victory.
And while Diego Zazueta, Travis Pang, Andon Hanson, Killian Pressley and other did their part and then some, it was SDHS goalie, Daniel Gonzalez, that arguably played the biggest role in ending the week with the CIF-SS championship plaque.
On Wednesday, Gonzalez had an incredible 20 saves in the semifinal round at BP.
Fast forward nearly 72 hours, and the San Dimas junior had 10 more saves in the Saints third victory this year over the Conquistadores.
The best way of summing up Daniel’s value to the program is simple:
He held the offenses of Buena Park and Don Lugo to 1/3 and 1/2 of their scoring averages this season.
