Football:
The Claremont defense did their part and then some on Friday night.
But the Wolfpack offense was held to just one score, and Mayfair would head home to Lakewood with a 12-7 victory in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 7 playoffs.
The Monsoons took a 3-0 lead on a 21-yard, first-quarter field goal by Mercedes Sibrian.
And that would be the only points of the half.
Mayfair extended its advantage to 10-0 when Evan Tomich scored on a 3-yard run at 5:05 of the third quarter.
Claremont would cut into the lead early in the fourth quarter.
Nathan Giles and Zack Leeper hooked up on a 35-yard TD pass.
Mayfair took the ensuing drive deep into CHS territory, but Ryan Dunfee and his boys on the defensive side of the ball held the Monsoons on third and fourth down plays to take over on downs.
The Wolfpack, though, never really got their running or passing game going on Friday.
What had to be most frustrating for CHS was a number of dropped passes by their most skilled players, and the inability of Nathan Giles to get much going on the ground.
In the two weeks prior, the CHS quarterback scored five rushing TD’s.
But give credit to the Monsoons for doing just enough to earn a spot in the D-7 semifinal round.
Mayfair will host Golden Valley next Friday.
The Grizzlies (8-4) defeated Paloma Valley, 42-28.
This senior class has been nothing short of incredible for CHS.
In the last three years alone, the Wolfpack have won a pair of San Antonio League championships, and made trips to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, including a victory over top-seeded Laguna Beach last season.
