Girls Volleyball:
Marshall Fundamental finds itself in the CIF-SS Division 9 semifinal round.
And they did so by sweeping a third postseason opponent.
On Wednesday night, the Eagles defeated visiting Hillcrest Christian by scores of 28-26, 25-19 and 25-13.
Coach Jeffrey Thai summed it up like this: “we played a really strong Hillcrest Christian school that came out firing. The first set lead kept going back and forth, but Marshall took it 28-26. Marshall played much better the next two sets as they won with scores of 25-19 and 25-13. Our front row remains impressive with Journey Blueford again leading the way with 10 kills and 4 blocks. But tonight it was Evelyn Mkhitarian that Hillcrest had no answers for. Evelyn kept hitting the open line shots that they were unable to defend. When their coach switched up their blocking, Evelyn went angle. She finished the game with 7 aces and 8 kills. Our defense was at its best tonight against the best hitting team we’ve seen during playoffs so far. Our setter, Lauren Sandoval, played very well defensively tonight.”
Lauren Sandoval had two kills, 24 assists and a block.
Abigail Garibay finished with two aces and two kills, and Alexis Delgado contributed four kills in the win.2 aces 2 kills
Up next: Marshall will face Excelsior Charter on Saturday, and the location will be determined on Thursday.

Quotable:
Marshall Fundamental coach, Jeffrey Thai: “Our conversation in our pre-game meeting was about “practice makes improvements” and we use each game that we had played as a practice for the next game. I told them that I wanted to see them fix the mistakes from the last match in this current one. We faced a very good team and our girls definitely answered the call. This is one of the best games I’ve seen them play all season. The other team had no answers for Journey and Evelyn and they took advantage of it. We’ll go back into practice tomorrow and get ready for a tough match on Saturday.”
