How would La Salle respond to last week’s 61-6 thumping at the hands of St. Pius in the Del Rey League opener?

Quite well.

The Lancers got four TD passes from quarterback David Mysza in a 28-7 victory over their visitors from St. Anthony.

After having a TD wiped off the board because of a penalty, La Salle would eventually take a 7-0 lead when Mysza hit Aidan Leyland on a 15-yard TD in the first quarter.

St. Anthony would catch the Lancers at 7-7, when, on a 4th-and-18 play, Darius Davis caught a 21-yard TD pass from Benny Burns.

Mysza and Leyland would give La Salle a 13-7 lead at the break.

On the play, Mysza looked to be sprinting into the west end zone, but ultimately flipped it to Leyland for a 4-yard touchdown.

What seemed to end any hope for the Saints was when Will Clougherty made the play of the game.

On a third-and-long play in the third quarter. Mysza threw the ball behind the Lancers’ senior.

Clougherty, however, managed to snag the ball with his left hand, put the ball against his chest, and sprinted into the west end zone for an 85-yard TD.

Mysza would run the ball in for the 2-point conversion and La Salle took a 21-7 lead.

Fifty second later, Mauricio Pavon would close out the scoring with a 20-yard TD catch from Mysza.

The Lancers’ defense kept pressure on the Saints quarterback all game, with Andrew Boecking being a major headache for the St. Anthony offense.

While La Salle coach Ben Buys couldn’t have been happy with the number of flags thrown in a game that seemed to drag on forever, he had to be pleased that for the most part, his players didn’t allow St. Anthony’s trash talk or late hits to take them out of their game.

Up next: La Salle will take next week off before closing out the final two weeks of the regular season with games against last-place St. Genevieve and second-place Harvard Westlake.
