Football:
The one SGV area program that has accomplished more in 2022, but gotten the least coverage or respect is the Azusa High School football program.
And I won’t pretend the Aztecs schedule is anything that resembles a murderers-row, but they have decimated everyone that stands in their way.
After Friday’s 70-0 beatdown of Workman, AHS has an overall record of 6-0 overall, and 2-0 in Montview League games.
Over that stretch, the Aztecs have defeated Mountain View, Century, Garey, Glendale, Duarte and Workman by a combined margin of 288-27.
The AHS defense has pitched two shutouts, and none of their six opponents have scored more than seven points.
It’s the program’s first 6-0 start in 12 years.
In Friday’s blowout of the Lobos, Jimmy Romo had four TD’s.
And all four came in a different fashion.
Romo scored on an 81-yard reception, an 83-yard punt return and a 60-yard pick-six.
And to cap his night, Romo had a 58-yard rushing TD.
Martin Cuevas rushed for 150 yards and two TD’s.
And Azusa quarterback, Nathan Noguez-Estrada, had TD runs of 45 and 70 yards.
There is a very high likelihood that Azusa will enter the playoffs with a 10-0 record, and its first (full schedule) Montview League championship since 2014.
Last season, the Aztecs went 2-0 in an abbreviated season.
The 2022 schedule is pretty unique, as Azusa faces league foes Gladstone, Duarte and Workman twice.
Thus far, the Aztecs have defeated Duarte and Workman by a combined score of 122-7.
AHS will face off with Gladstone this Thursday at Citrus, and then again in the season finale, before the two schools merge into one.
If the Aztecs were to finish the regular season 10-0, it would be the first time since 2010.
