Football:

Shortly before Thursday’s showdown with Northview, Bonita senior Georgie Markossian got a call that his mom was going into emergency surgery.

That’s something no one wants to hear, and it would seem reasonable or even likely that Markossian would have difficulty dedicating 100 percent of his focus to a football game.

While the news worried him, Markossian wanted to do something special for his mom.

And Annette Markossian’s son did just that.

Markossian dedicated his four TD catches, 140 receiving yards and a 42-35 victory over Northview to his mother.

The last of four came on a 45-yard TD pass from Daniel Andrade with approximately one minute to play.

Bonita’s defense sealed the victory, as Joe Parra picked off a Vikings’ pass to quell any chance of Northview making a dramatic, last-minute drive.

Thursday night ended far better than it started for Markossian.

While his mom is in ICU, she is expected to be fine.

Andrade threw for 357 yards and five TD’s.

Bryan Bradshaw had one receiving score and Adrian McCoy had a pick-six for the Bearcats.

Offensively for the Vikings, James Arellanes was 20-of-30 for 272 yards.

Arellanes threw TD passes to Dwayne Thompson (37 yards) and Angel Barraza (16).

And the NHS quarterback connected with Thompson on a late 2-point conversion to tie the game at 35-35.

Barraza also had three rushing scores and finished with four total TD’s.

Up next: The Bearcats and Vikings both have week-seven byes to get ready for league play.

On October 14th, BHS travels to Alta Loma in the Mountain West League opener.

And NHS will head over to Los Altos in the first game of Valle Vista League play.

Quotable:

Bonita coach, Steve Bogan: “It was a huge win for our program. Our defense forced three turnovers and that was the difference. Georgie Markossian was
had an unbelievable night and sealed the win with his late touchdown catch from Daniel Andrade. Cole Parra and Adrian McCoy had picks and we recovered a fumble on a kickoff which led to a score. We also had a huge goal line stand with a big hit and tackle by Noah Mikhail in the second quarter.”

Bonita senior, Georgie Markossian: “We knew that we’d need to be on the same page if we wanted to beat Northview. I thought we really got going when Daniel got to call some plays on offense, because it kept us in tune. We had to stay true to ourselves. It’s pretty surreal to score four touchdowns in a huge win like this. I was really proud of the way we were locked in and played as a team.”
