Girls Tennis:

It was the first-ever meeting between Maranatha and the Providence (Burbank) Pioneers, who were missing their top player due to injury.

The Lady Minutemen were especially sharp out of the gates, putting the pressure on from the outset, and emerging with a 6-0 lead after the first round.

All of their singles players – Stella Hsieh, Natalie Arminak, and Kathryn Khalil – came away with 6-0 wins, while their doubles – Kasey McCoy/Esmee Eaton, Mia Huang/Mia Su, and Nelli Breuer/Marie Wolfrum – were pushed, but prevailed, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

After building an 11-1 advantage after two rounds, Coach Arthur Hsieh inserted his alternates in the third round, including Audrey Loh, who played a set for just the second time this season, as she continues to begin making her comeback.

Loh won her set, 6-3, while both Sofia Celis and Audrey Ayrapetyan/Diana Sarksyan lost by the same 6-1 score.

By far, the most engaging set of the day was the match’s final set, as McCoy/Eaton battled a doubles team made up of two of the Pioneers’ regular singles players.

The match was entertaining and suspenseful, as the score stayed close the entire way, with the Pioneers consistently pulling ahead by one, followed by McCoy/Eaton pulling even.

It remained that way until McCoy/Eaton finally broke through, taking a 5-4 lead.

Providence responded, evening the score at 5-5.

With long rallies and back-and-forth action at the net, spectators were treated to a high-level finale, as both McCoy and Eaton each applied constant pressure and dazzled at the net, before prevailing, 7-5.

Today’s scoreline:
