Boys Athlete of the Week:

In year two of the Rand Holdren regime, the Maranatha football program has already tripled their win total from a 1-7 season in 2021.

With a 3-0-1 mark, the Minutemen are off to their best start since 2017.

There are a number of reasons for the ascension of the MHS football program, but perhaps none greater than its balanced offense.

Michael Martin has been terrific at quarterback, and through the first four games of 2022, he’s accounted for 14 (nine passing & five rushing) TD’s.

On the flip side, an effective running back makes it easier for his quarterback to flourish, and it plays a big role in winning the time of possession battle.

And that’s where MHS sophomore Miles O’Malley comes in.

On Thursday night, O’Malley carried the ball 25 times for 249 yards in a 41-24 victory at Western Christian.

O’Malley also had a pair of TD runs.

Heading into Thursday’s contest in Upland, the Fighting Lancers (592) were ranked 274 spots ahead of Maranatha (866) in the MaxPreps state rankings.

MHS wasn’t intimidated in the slightest.

In fact, the Maranatha defense held WC to nine points under their weekly scoring average.

And thanks to O’Malley’s ability to dominate throughout, and along with his offensive line and certainly his quarterback, the Minutemen literally doubled the point total that the Fighting Lancers’ defense had averaged through the first month of the 2022 season.

So far, O’Malley has 676 yards rushing on 60 carries.

That’s good enough for an 11.3 per-carry average.

And he’s scored eight rushing TD’s.

In three of the first four games, O’Malley has surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark, and he averages 169 yards on the ground.

Up next: MHS will host Silver Valley (3-1) on Friday night.

The kickoff is set for 7.
