Mt. SAC put its 2022 season opener away early on Saturday evening.
The Mounties scored 24 points in the first 10:52 of the first quarter, and they cruised to a 69-7 blowout of visiting LA Valley College.
Mt. SAC scored the game’s first 62 points before LAVC got on the board with 32 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
What had to please the Mounties three-time state championship coach, Bob Jastrab, was the fact that his program dominated in all three phases of the game.
But even more impressive, and despite the score and the weather, the Mt. SAC players remained engaged throughout the three-plus hour contest.
Reaven Tribune scored on a 4-yard run to get the Mounties on the board.
And after an 18-yard field goal, Anthony Hebert picked off a pass and brought it back eight yards for a
17-0 lead.
Hebert would pick off two passes for the Mounties.
And for all intents and purposes, Ike Udengwu III put the game away for good with TD passes of 16 and 6 yards to Cade Cadam.
It was a pretty big night for former Bonita players, as Cadam had five receptions for 38 yards, including the two scores.
But also for their former quarterback, Sean Jastrab.
Jastrab, who expected to redshirt this year, was forced into action because of injuries.
And he made the most of his time.
Jastrab went 4-of-6 for 63 yards, and he threw TD passes to Kanyon St. Julien (24 yards) and Mario Martinez (21 yards).
Tribune had a game-high 64 yards on five carries, and his second TD run came on a 47-yard sprint into the north end zone.
Udengwu completed 12 of 20 for 115 yards, including the two scores and he was picked once.
Mt. SAC kicker, Diego Esqueda, had a remarkable game on Saturday.
The freshman from Beaumont was responsible for 15 points.
Esqueda made field goals of 18 and 33 yards, and went 9-for-9 on extra-point attempts.
The Mt. SAC offense delivered, including a 464-98 advantage in total yards.
But the Mounties defense was just as dominant, and they never allowed LAVC to sniff a competitive quarter, let alone any thoughts of victory.
LA Valley could muster just seven first downs all night, as compared to 30 for Mt. SAC.
And the Mounties forced seven turnovers, while LAVC picked off one MSAC pass.
Lantz Russell had the Mounties third pick of the night and Andrew Williams led the way with five tackles.
Joshua Taylor had two tackles and forced a pair of fumbles.
Up next: Mt. SAC will host Saddleback next Saturday.
The kickoff is slated for 6.
