Football:

Whatever Maranatha coach Rand Holdren said at the half of Friday’s showdown at Garey sure did the trick.

The Minutemen trailed 28-21 at the break, but MHS would outscore the Vikings, 35-0, in the second half, and claimed a 56-28 road victory.

Maranatha is now 2-0.

Michael Martin has gotten off to a great start.

One week after Martin threw for two scores and ran for two more in a blowout of Beverly Hills, the MHS senior exploded for five total TD’s.

He threw for 225 yards and four TD’s.

And Martin would gain 130 yards on the ground and had one rushing TD.

Jah Reeves had three receiving TD’s for the Minutemen and forced a fumble on defense.

Miles O’Malley rushed for two scores.

Jake Neely picked off a Garey pass.

And last but not least, Carter Shupper had a 40-yard pick-six and the MHS junior recovered a fumble.

Up next: The Minutemen will host Bishop Montgomery next Friday at 7.

The Knights (3-0) put a 54-0 beatdown on Villa Park in their week-two contest.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach, Rand Holdren: “Our team showed some heart tonight. Down 28-21 at half, the defense stepped it up in the second half. Offense got rolling and we were tough to stop in the second half. Proud of the team rallied in the second half. Great win for the program.”

Records: Maranatha (2-0); Garey (0-3)
