Rio Hondo Prep Rushes for 323 Yards in 28-10 Victory Over Linfield Christian; Nate Curtis Scored Twice for Kares

In a battle of opposing offensive philosophies, Rio Hondo Prep defeated visiting Linfield Christian, 28-10, on Thursday night.

The Lions had a 230-82 advantage through the air, but RHP out-rushed LCHS by a margin of 323-82.

Rio Hondo Prep took a 7-0 lead into the half, and the Kares would enjoy a 21-3 advantage as the game headed into the fourth quarter.

Anthony Hernandez scored on a 7-yard run with 3:56 to play in the second quarter to get RHP on the board.

Midway through the third period, Ryan McCulloch doubled the Kares lead to 14-0 on a 6-yard TD run.

Jeremy Maloney’s 35-yard field goal got the Lions to within 14-3 with 4:28 to go in the third quarter.

RHP extended their lead to 21-3, as Nate Curtis rumbled in from 10 yards out.

Early in the fourth quarter, Linfield Christian’s Grant Taylor would haul in a 29-yard scoring strike from Jonathan Aguilera, and the Kares lead was trimmed to 21-10.

But RHP would put the game away, as Curtis scored on a 12-yard TD run.

Thanks to a run-heavy offense, Rio Hondo Prep had a 33-15 (minutes) advantage in the time of possession battle.

And RHP picked up 24 first downs, as opposed to 12 for Linfield Christian.

The Lions aided the Kares cause with an alarming 13 penalties.

Four separate Rio Hondo Prep players had 71 yards or more on the ground.

McCulloch had 85 yards on 12 carries, and Curtis carried the ball nine times for 82 yards.

Armando Carbajal (eight carries for 79 yards) and Noah Penunuri (16 for 71 yards) played a big role in RHP improving to 2-0 in 2022.

Carbajal also 4-of-5 for 82 yards.

Hernandez caught one pass for 67 yards.

Aguilera completed 14 of 21 for 230 yards and the one TD.

Grant Taylor caught seven passes for 130 yards and a TD.

Micah Little had a game-high 9.5 tackles in the loss.

For RHP, McCulloch led the way with five tackles and Joshua Taflinger contributed 4.5 tackles in Thursday’s win.

Up next: The Kares will travel to Boron next Friday at 7.
