Girls Athletes of the Week:

To say that things were looking up for the Marshall Fundamental girls volleyball program would be quite the understatement.

In the first two weeks of the 2022 season, the Lady Eagles have already doubled their win total from a year ago.

Marshall Fundamental closed out the week with a pair of victories over Holy Family and Mesrobian.

It took the Eagles four games to defeat Holy Family and they’d go on to sweep Mesrobian to improve their season record to 6-3.

Everyone on their roster has played a part in the dramatic turnaround, and Alexis Delgado and Lauren Sandoval have especially played significant roles this week and during the start of the new season.

Alexis Delgado (outside hitter):

Delgado leads the team stats in five different categories.

Beyond the stats, the girls plays better when she’s on the floor, according to Coach Jeffrey Thai.

She is an extremely smart player that takes advantage of the holes in the defense.

Lauren Sandoval (setter):

Lauren leads teams in assists.

What isn’t in the stats is as a setter, Lauren is one of the scrappiest players and has the second most digs on the team.

She had many saves from her teammate’s errand passes that saved us on points.

Up next: Marshall will host San Gabriel Mission on Monday afternoon at 3:15.

Quotable:

Marshall Fundamental coach, Jeffrey Thai: “Our team’s main focus going into spring and summer training is to better ourselves individually and as a team. At the start of every practice, we remind ourselves of our team motto – “The Road To CIF Begins at Practice”. Every player pushes each other to be the best version of themselves and to make our school proud. Although our record is at a good start, we also know that what we do in league is much more important. We cannot be complacent and must continue to push ourselves to playing better and smarter volleyball. Lauren Sandoval and Alexis Delgado connect very well on the offensive end. Our middles are putting strong blocking numbers so far. We work on strengthening our weak points every day at practice. Our core group of players all returned this season. They still remember the bitter taste of defeat and are now hungry to make an impact in league this year.”
