Football:
As difficult as it might seem to believe, it’s true.
In the first two games of the 2022 season, St. Francis has allowed 109 points in road games at West Ranch and Mira Costa.
And yet the Golden Knights are now 1-1.
On Friday, St. Francis scored in the last 20 seconds at Mira Costa to edge the Mustangs, 52-48, in yet another shootout.
With just over a minute to play, Matt Kraskouskas scored on a 2-yard TD run and Mira Costa converted on the two-point pass to take a 48-45 lead.
But fear not Golden Knights’ fans, Jack Jacobs had one more shot at pulling off a stunner.
Jacobs would hit Jett McCullough on a 50-yard completion, and that set up a Jacobs-to-McCullough 14-yard TD to give St. Francis a thrilling four-point victory.
Jacobs threw for 390 yards and five scores.
Antonio Merlos caught two TD passes and finished with 60 receiving yards.
Adam Sandoval snared three passes from Jacobs for 152 yards and a TD.
John Calmette, who spelled an injured Devyn Turner, gained 87 yards on the ground and caught a TD pass.
Last week, the Golden Knights allowed West Ranch to pull away for a 61-41 victory.
And while the SFHS has struggled mightily to keep opponents out of the end zone thus far, Tyler Cofre had a huge pick-six in the second half to help turn the tide.
One last Mira Costa “Hail Mary’ pass fell to the ground and St. Francis left Manhattan Beach with a much-needed first victory of the season.
Up next: The Golden Knights will travel to Long Beach next Friday night to take on Millikan.
The Rams (1-1) fell to visiting Cathedral, 39-38, last night.
