College World Series:
Former Glendora High School shortstop Jacob Gonzalez had been struggling mightily at the plate in the 2022 College World Series.
In fact, the Ole Miss sophomore had gone 0-for-13 at one point.
But on Sunday, and needing just one win to claim the College World Series championship, Gonzalez shined in the biggest game of his life.
He accounted for half of the Rebels six hits, going 3-4, with two runs and two RBIs.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Gonzalez hit a solo shot to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead.
After Oklahoma answered with two seventh-inning runs, the Rebels shortstop would single home TJ McCants in the bottom of the eighth to catch the Sooners at 2-2.
Justin Bench and Gonzalez scored on wild pitches to extend the Ole Miss lead to 4-2.
And Brandon Johnson would get the final three outs to set off a huge celebration in Omaha.
For those who don’t know Gonzalez, he was a four-year starter for the GHS baseball program.
And in his two years as the Tartans quarterback, Glendora would go 22-4 and make consecutive appearances in the CIF-SS semifinal round.
It goes without saying that Jacob has the support and admiration of every current and former Tartan, and we are very proud of the way he represented our school.
Jacob Gonzalez is a great athlete, but far more important, he’s an even better young man.
