Baseball:

Considering they trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning of Thursday’s CIF State Division 2 semifinal, the chances of claiming a mercy-rule victory an inning later was almost incomprehensible.

But that’s exactly what Etiwanda accomplished.

The Eagles got six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Birmingham of Lake Balboa, 12-1, and in the process, EHS earned a spot in Saturday’s D-2 state championship.

Dylan Goff improved to 12-0, going all six innings.

Goff allowed four hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Domenik Cervantes hit a solo shot in the top of the fifth to account for the Patriots offense.

Goff threw 93 pitches, 60 0f which were strikes.

Gavin Taylor, Alex Olvera and Johan Ceja had one single apiece, while Collin Taylor, Richard Barrera and Jaden Shuler each walked once.

Daniel Flores was struck with the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in his 4 1/3 innings of work.

Flores walked one and fanned four EHS batters.

Etiwanda would get three runs apiece off Jake Armado and Chris Romero on four hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings.

Nine separate Eagles had at least one hit and they finished with 14, including four of the extra-base variety.

Brady Ebel continues his ridiculous ways.

The 14-year-old freshman went 3-for-3, including a walk, three doubles and an RBI.

Armando Briseno walked, singled twice, scored a pair of runs and had two RBIs.

Mike Harrison singled, doubled, scored and drove in two runs.

Tyler McEvoy walked, had two singles, two RBIs and scored once.

Kaedon Mas walked, singled, scored and had one RBI.

Parker Sobiesiak had a two-run single in the sixth, which gave the Eagles an 11-1 lead.

It was Briseno’s RBI single that scored McEvoy that would clinch the semifinal-round victory.

Freddie Capacete and Jaedon Toki singled and scored one run apiece for the Eagles.

Yahir Ramirez, Christian Moqueda, Chris Montes De Oca and Garrett Mnich scored one run each.

Eric Valles scored and had one RBI, and Tyler Shigenaka singled.

The Eagles extended their current win streak to 10.

Up next: EHS will host No. 2 seeded Torrey Pines of San Diego on Saturday at 4.

The Falcons (22-12) picked up their second consecutive 1-0 victory in the state playoffs.

On Tuesday, Torrey Pines defeated Palos Verdes and on Thursday, it was Rancho Bernardo.

Peyton Rodgers tossed a six hit shutout, didn’t issue a walk and fanned six.
