When people talk about baseball coaches in the SGV, Charter Oak’s Elias Chavez doesn’t get as much respect for what he’s built as this writer thinks he should.

Just like all programs, the Chargers have their ups and downs in the regular season, but Chavez seems to get his boys peaking at playoff time.

And 2022 is no different.

In 2021 and 2022 alone, COHS and Chavez are 4-1, and that includes Tuesday’s 5-0 victory over visiting Grace Brethren in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

Evan Avita threw a two-hit shutout for the Chargers.

Avitia walked one and struck out nine.

It took Avitia 87 pitches to finish what he started, and 58 of the 87 went for strikes.

Zack Day and Zach Mora had one single apiece to account for the Grace Brethren offense.

Mason Reid went all six innings for the Lancers, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits.

Reid walked one and fanned two COHS batters.

Alejandro Blanquet doubled twice, scored and had an RBI.

Avitia helped himself with a walk, two singles and an RBI.

Chris Gonzalez had an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to give COHS an early 1-0 lead.

Dave Montoya singled twice and scored.

Nathan Arevalos doubled, scored twice and had one RBI.

Anthony Vasquez scored once in the win.

Up next: COHS will host La Sierra on Friday.

The Eagles (21-10) defeated Woodbridge, 8-1, in their second-round game.

Quotable:

COHS coach, Elias Chavez: “We had a game plan on both sides of the ball and the boys executed the plan. Evan came out and was the senior pitcher that we needed to lead the team. Offensively 1-9 bought into the approach. The bottom half of the lineup did a tremendous job.”
