Baseball:
Loyola won its third CIF-SS Division 4 playoff game on Tuesday, and for the second consecutive time, it took some late-inning heroics to extend the Cubs season.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Cubs scored twice for the walk-off 5-4 victory.
With runners on second and third and with one out, Tino Valdez tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single.
And Carson Chavez would follow with an RBI, one-out single that scored Augustin Lopez with the game-winning run.
Charlie Royle went six-plus innings for the Bruins.
Royle allowed five runs on eight hits.
He walked one and fanned seven Cubs’ batters.
Chavez singled, doubled and had three RBIs.
Valdez went 2-for-4, scored and had two RBIs.
Adam Magpoc singled and scored.
Alex Cohen singled twice in the win.
Augie Lopez singled, and as mentioned, scored the winning run.
Jake Arellano and Peyton Lodge scored one run apiece for the Cubs.
Loyola’s Joey Frey went 6 1/ innings, allowing four runs on nine hits.
Frey didn’t issue a walk and struck out six Bruins’ batters.
Carter Hampson got the final two outs in the top of the seventh inning and was credited with the win after the Cubs scored twice in the bottom half of the final frame.
Zack Wakefield had a monster game for Wilson.
Wakefield doubled, homered twice, scored two runs and had a pair of RBIs.
Taylor Kirk and Jake Fox singled and scored one run apiece.
Ryan Burack singled twice and Diego Orozco had an RBI base hit for the Bruins.
Up next: Loyola will host top-seeded Aquinas on Friday.
The defeated Flintridge Prep, 5-0, behind a one-hit shutout from Cade Nolan.
