Trailing 3-0 w/Two Outs in 7th Inning in D-4 Playoffs, Loyola Rallies for 5-4 Victory at San Marcos; Shea & Urbon’s 2-Run Hits Save Season

Baseball:

“Win one for the Gipper.”

Or more accurately, win one for Coach Sean Buller.

On Monday, the Loyola administration made sixth-year head coach Sean Buller aware that his contract would not be renewed in 2022-23.

Instead of thinking about himself, he went to practice and it was business as usual.

Buller’s sole focus was to get his Cubs ready for Tuesday’s CIF-SS Division 4 wild card game at Montebello.

Loyola’s Joey Frey would shut out the Oilers, 10-0, and Buller let his team know after the game that while he won’t be back next year, his heart and soul was going to be with the program until the final out this season.

That gets us to Thursday.

The Cubs made the hour-and-45-minute drive to Santa Barbara to take on San Marcos, but thanks to unusually high traffic, it took an additional 45 minutes to reach their destination.

And with two on and two out in the top of the seventh inning, Loyola trailed the Royals, 3-0.

After a walk and hit batter that got the Cubs on the board, Jackson Shea singled in two runs, and Walter Urbon doubled in two more, and Loyola left Santa Barbara with an emotional 5-4 victory.

Chase Hoover went six innings for San Marcos and was charged with two runs on six hits.

Hoover walked four and struck out 10.

Cole Schoenwetter got the loss, allowing three runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batter in just 2/3 of an inning.

Shea finished 2-for-4, scored and had the two seventh-inning RBIs.

Adam Magpoc singled and scored.

Alex Orman walked and scored.

Luca DiPaolo walked three times and singled.

Carson Chavez singled and was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

Peyton Lodge walked and singled, Nathan Borshell scored, and Tino Valdez singled in Thursday’s win.

Riley Russell went three scoreless innings for the Cubs, allowing one hit, walking two and fanning a pair of San Marcos batters.

The Royals got three runs (two earned) off Nathan Savarese on three hits.

Savarese went two innings walked two and struck out four.

Carter Hampson went a scoreless and hitless sixth, and then the Channel League champs got one run on one hit and a walk off of Henry Boylston.

Donnie Morgan came on and got the final out to secure the Cubs victory.

Aidan Mandel singled, doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Brad Cekada walked twice, singled and scored twice.

Darren Orlando singled and scored for the Royals.

Up next: The Cubs will host Andy Hall and Long Beach Wilson on Tuesday.

The Bruins (20-9) claimed an 8-3 victory at St. Anthony.
