Thanks to Maranatha coach Arthur Hsieh for this report:
Boys Tennis:
In his pre-match speech to his squad, Coach Arthur Hsieh told his team that there was a very good chance this match ends up 9-9, so he challenged them to get every game they could.
For the fourth time this season, Maranatha tied their opponents, 9-9; and for the fourth time, they prevailed on games.
This 72-71 win was the closest and the most important, as it propelled them into the 2nd round of the CIF-SS Div. 4 playoffs.
Coach Hsieh knew that although Wilson/Long Beach wasn’t ranked, they are a top ten caliber team.
He knew that they were one of what he calls “the x-factor teams” – unranked teams that no one wants to play.
Wilson plays in a tough league that boasts Div. 2 Millikan (the reigning Div. 4 champion) and the #2 seed in Div. 4, Long Beach Poly.
In their last match versus Long Beach Poly two weeks ago, Wilson lost 10-8, demonstrating their strength. Their league losses to those schools contributed to them being unranked coming into the playoffs.
It was a close match the entire way.
The Minutemen tied the score at 3-3 with a 7-6 (3) win by Shahe Yerevanian/Matt Yip.
In the last set of the 2nd round, it was the Bruins who tied the score, evening the match at 6-6. The 3rd round saw Maranatha pull ahead, 9-8, with one set being played and all eyes watching.
Wilson was leading 5-0, with a deuce-plus-one set point in hand.
Jordan Miao/Joshua Im won that point, putting the score at 5-1.
They won another game before succumbing 6-2. Little did they know that those final two games would be the difference, helping the Minutemen dodge a bullet, giving them the narrowest of victories.
Next up for the #3 seeded Minutemen is a 2nd round away match against the #16 Arrowhead Christian Academy Eagles, who defeated Quartz Hill, 15-3, today. The match will be held at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa on Friday, May 6 at 3 p.m.
