Baseball:
Bonita has put itself in a favorable position to claim its first Palomares League championship since 2019.
After Thursday’s 3-2 victory over visiting Glendora in nine innings, the Bearcats lead second-place Ayala by one game and third-place GHS by two.
Bonita is 6-0 against the Bulldogs and Tartans in 2022, and they have a pair of two-game series remaining with last-place Colony and fourth-place Alta Loma.
But back to Thursday.
Seth Wrightstone and Braydon Wooldridge went the first seven innings for BHS and GHS, respectively.
Wrightstone allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five, while Wooldridge surrendered a pair of runs on six hits and fanned seven.
It would be left to a pair of relievers, as Justin Santiago went two perfect innings in relief and struck out half of the six batters he faced to earn the win.
Matt Moreno got five outs for GHS, but gave up the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Bonita got to Moreno for two hits and a pair of walks.
Tyler Holley was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, and Jared Brunk scored the game winner.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Troy Estrada singled and Wooldridge got the Tartans even with a two-run blast off of Wrightstone.
Estrada finished 2-for-4, with the run scored.
Cole Fishman singled twice for GHS and Brady Baeza singled.
Bonita took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Bryan Bradshaw had an RBI single and Diego Vazquez doubled and scored on a double steal.
Bradshaw was 2-for-5, with an RBI.
JT Fenton singled and scored.
Jared Brunk doubled and scored.
Luke Mistone and Daniel Munoz had one single and one walk apiece.
Garrett Patterson, the winning pitcher from Tuesday’s game at GHS, singled on Thursday.
