College Baseball:
As they’ve done all season, Pasadena City College rebounded quickly and well from a letdown.
Just over two weeks ago, Mt. SAC opened their three-game series against PCC with a 15-run victory, and the Lancers bounced back and won the series, 2-1.
Last week, LA Harbor claimed a three-run road victory in the first of three, and yet again, the Lancers rallied to claim its second consecutive SCC series, 2-1.
And just two days ago, Long Beach City College trailed 6-2 in the eighth and left Brookside with an 11-9 victory.
Fast forward 48 hours and it was PCC’s turn to respond.
Trailing 5-2 in the top of the ninth inning, the Lancers rallied for six runs and defeated the Vikings, 8-5, to even the series at 1-1.
Max Blessinger’s three-run shot tied the game at 5-5.
One batter later, the SCC’s hottest hitter, Raider Tello, hit a solo blast to give the Lancers their first lead of the game at 6-5.
Jakob Guardado and Jake Trabbie followed with RBI singles to give PCC a couple additional insurance runs.
Moises Guzman went the first seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
Guzman walked five and struck out six PCC batters.
Timothy Fife and Marcellus Henry each surrendered three ninth-inning runs apiece in the loss.
Blessinger also walked and finished with four RBIs.
Aryonis Harrison went 3-for-4, including a fifth-inning RBI triple.
Harrison scored twice in the win.
Matt Rice walked, singled and scored.
Jake Trabbie finished 2-for-4, with a walk, single, double and the ninth-inning RBI.
LBCC got four runs on six hits off Ryan Graves in the first two innings.
Benny Olguin came in and allowed just one run on five hits over the final seven innings to earn the win.
Olguin walked two and struck out three Vikings’ batters.
Matthew Pinal had a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning to give LBCC a 4-0 lead.
Alex Seguine singled, tripled and scored.
Evan Vazquez singled, doubled and drove in the first run of the game.
Moises Guzman went 2-for-4, walked, scored twice and had an RBI.
Malik Clayton walked, singled and scored, and Raul Garcia walked, singled, scored and his RBI in the seventh gave the Vikings a 5-2 lead.
Up next: PCC will host LBCC on Saturday at noon in the third and final game of their SCC series.
Quotable:
PCC coach, Pat McGee: “I’m really happy for the kids! They have worked hard and persevered versus a tough Long Beach staff. Max has had tremendous at-bats during the most critical points of the young season. He has been everything we could have asked for and more.
Raider continues to impress and he gets better every day. He’s done everything this program has asked of him and more. And that includes carrying this team on his back for stretches of the season when it’s been required.”
PCC center fielder, Max Blessinger: “The last two games have been a lot of fun. These important conference games during the regular season are as close to a postseason environment as you can get. They stole one from us on Tuesday, so that made today a big win. When you have an offense that’s averaging nine runs a game or something crazy like that, we’re really confident in our ability to score. I think that confidence is why we’ve been able to put up runs with our backs against the wall.”
