Girls Water Polo:

The famous “defense wins championships” saying was proven true yet again.

This time the author was the Bonita High School girls water polo program.

The Bearcats and goalie, Maddie Jackson, held Woodbridge to half of their 12-goal per-game average, and won the CIF-SS Division 3 championship, 8-6, on Saturday morning in Irvine.

Jackson finished with nine blocks and two steals.

Over their four-game playoff run, the Bonita defense held Arlington, Vista Murrieta, Peninsula and Woodbridge to a combined 30 goals under their scoring average.

Tori Carlson provided two goals and two steals.

Hailee Heaton chipped in with two goals of her own.

Katie Hugar finished with two goals and a steal.

Emma Dore contributed one goal and a steal.

Grace Jackson scored once in Saturday’s title-clinching victory.
