College Baseball:
PCC won its third consecutive game to start the 2022 season.
After victories over Citrus and Cypress last week, the Lancers had four pitchers combine on a two-hit shutout on Thursday afternoon.
PCC defeated LA Pierce, 6-0, in a SoCal Challenge Tournament game at Jackie Robinson Field.
It’s the program’s first three-game win streak since late April of 2019.
And it’s pitching staff has allowed just six earned runs in the first 27 innings of 2022.
Jakob Guardado went the first three innings and allowed a hit, walked and struck out one batter apiece.
Nicco Day was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless fourth and fifth innings.
He too walked and struck out a batter.
Glendora High’s Rider Gardner has been a pleasant addition to the Lancers pitching staff for PCC skipper, Pat McGee.
Gardner didn’t allow a hit, walked one and struck out three over his two innings of work.
And Nathan Mertens closed out the victory with two scoreless and hitless innings.
Esteban Perez and Robbie Treto had one single each to account for the LA Pierce offense.
Colin Mitchell was saddled with the loss, after allowing three runs over the first five innings.
The Lancers got one run off Ryan Barry and two more against Jorge Romero.
Raider Tello had three of PCC’s eight hits, including a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
In his two starts, the former Arcadia standout is 6-for-10, with three doubles, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
Kenny Kim singled and scored, and Marco Martinez had an RBI double in the three-run fifth inning that scored Max Blessinger.
Blessinger’s fielder’s choice in the fifth drove in a run.
Andrew Scannell walked, had a sac fly and scored.
Guardado helped his own cause with a single and run scored.
Aryonis Harrison singled and drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.
Up next: PCC will host Irvine Valley today (Friday) at 2.
Quotable:
PCC coach, Pat McGee: “Our pitching staff has been great. I am proud of the way they’ve attacked the strike zone and competed. I am most pleased with how competitive our pitching staff has been, and I am hoping once we move more guys into the rotation, they have the same mentality. Offensively, as the guys get familiar with JC pitchers and how they attack the strikezone, it will be important for them to make the adjustments at the plate to be successful. Raider Tello has had great at-bats, and he’s using the whole field.”
