Boys Basketball:

The last time Damien defeated Baseline League power Etiwanda in a Baseline League contest, Spivey Word was in the seventh grade.

Now a senior, Word had a game-high 16 points to lead the Spartans to a 59-45 victory over the Eagles.

The win snaps a nine-game, head-to-head skid, and moves Damien to within one-half game of Etiwanda.

If DHS wins its final three games of the season (this week), they will clinch at least a share of the Baseline League championship.

Word scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

The Spartans got great balance on Monday.

Kaleb Smith had 15 points, RJ Smith chipped in with 14, and Jimmy Oladokun contributed 10 points in the win.

DHS had a 16-point advantage from the charity stripe.

Damien was 22-of-30 from the free-throw line, while Etiwanda converted 6-of-8.

The Eagles got a team-high 12 points from Jacob Barcelo.

Jimmy Baker had 10 points, Jeremy Williams chipped in with eight and Kwinten Crenshaw provided seven points in the loss.

Damien looked every bit the fourth-ranked program in the latest CIF-SS Division 1 poll that was released yesterday.

Up next: Damien and Etiwanda will both be in action tonight (Tuesday).

The Eagles host RCHS and the Spartans travel to Chino Hills.

The tip is set for 6:30 for both games.
