Boys Athlete of the Week:
Damien guard Spivey Word is off to a great start to his senior year.
Word and his teammates went 5-0 this week, and that was good enough to claim the Sunny Hills Tournament championship.
In all, Word scored 87 points.
Word opened the season with 21 points in the Spartans 20-point victory over Kennedy in their first-round game.
One night later, he scored 21 again in a blowout of El Dorado.
On Wednesday, Word contributed 12 points in a 37-point drubbing of Hillcrest.
In the semifinal round on Friday, the Spartans senior finished with 21 points in a 13-point win over Orange Lutheran.
And Word closed out the tournament with 12 points in Saturday’s title-game victory over Riverside Poly.
