Spivey Word & Kaleb Smith Lead Second-Half Surge in Damien’s 74-61 Victory Over Orange Lutheran

Boys Basketball:

For the first time in four games, a Damien basketball game was competitive at the half.

In fact, the Spartans and Orange Lutheran were tied at 39 in the semifinal round of the Sunny Hills Tournament.

Damien, though, outscored the Lancers by 13 in the second half and claimed a 74-61 victory.

Spivey Word scored nine of his game-high 21 points in the second half.

It’s the third time in the first four games that Word scored 21 points in leading the Damien offense.

Kaleb Smith contributed 18 points for the Spartans, and 11 of which came in the second half.

RJ Smith finished with 17.

Seth Brown paced the O-LU scoring with 14 points and David Manea had 12 in the loss.

Up next: The Spartans will battle Riverside Poly today (Saturday) at Sunny Hills High School.

The tip is slated for 7:30.
