While every member of the Northview High School girls tennis roster contributed all season in the Vikings’ success, no one did more in Friday’s CIF-SS Division 5 championship than the No. 1 doubles team of Jianna Cervantes and her partner, Ana Luna.
The Vikings had an impressive run to the final round with victories over Downey, Chaffey, Loara and El Rancho.
The closest match being an 11-7 triumph of Chaffey in the second round.
Waiting at The Claremont Club, however, was an Apple Valley program that had just eliminated top-seeded Katella in the most dominating fashion, 14-4.
Northview, though, went 5-4 in both singles and doubles and edged Apple Valley, 10-8, to clinch the CIF-SS Division 5 team tennis championship.
As mentioned, Jianna Cervantes and Ana Luna led the way.
Cervantes-Luna won all three matches by scores of 6-2, 7-6 and 6-3.
The Vikings No. 2 doubles team of Constanza Dominguez and Gisselle Figueroa, went 2-1 on Friday, and did so by scores of 6-3, 6-4 and 5-7.
Victoria Paez, who plays No. 1 singles, finished 2-1 (3-6, 6-1, 6-0).
No. 2 singles, Jessica Gustafson, provided two big wins, and had set scores of 3-6, 6-3 and 6-1.
Julia Sanchez may have only gone 1-2 with scores of 0-6, 4-6 and 6-4.
But her victory made it impossible for Apple Valley to catch the Vikings at 9-9 all in games and have the match decided by counting games.
