Girls Athletes of the Week:
The final week of the 2021 regular season had plenty of drama for the Upland High School girls volleyball program.
It looked like the best case scenario was a sharing of the Baseline League title with Rancho Cucamonga.
Upland did their part by sweeping Los Osos on Tuesday (25-23, 25-19, 25-21) and claiming a four-set victory at Etiwanda on Thursday by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 27-25 and 25-17.
What no one saw coming, however, was winless St. Lucy’s sweeping RCHS, and knocking the Cougars out of the Baseline League penthouse that is was sharing with Upland.
The Highlanders clinched their first outright Baseline League championship since 2008.
In the sweep over second-place Los Osos:
Brooke McKee had 22 kills, and 14 of which were in the third set.
Riley Contreras added 12 kills and 10 digs.
Maddie Robertson finished with 36 assists and five digs.
And in Thursday’s four-set, league-clinching triumph over Etiwanda:
McKee had eight kills, five blocks and five aces.
Contreras had a match-high 16 kills and eight digs.
Robertson provided 26 assists and 12 digs.
Up next: Upland will host Culver City on Thursday in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.
