Thanks to Maranatha for this report
Girls Tennis:
Both teams knew the importance of today’s match – gaining control of a potential CIF-SS playoff berth.
If the Defenders win, they even the season series at 1-1, setting up their final clash of the season as the likely decider of who will get the Olympic League’s second and final automatic playoff berth.
If Maranatha wins, it puts them unequivocally in the driver’s seat.
Both teams put out the same lineups as they did last week, in Maranatha’s close victory.
It looked like this match was heading in the same direction, with all of the same players and teams winning and losing in the first round, as they did last week, except #3 singles,
Violet Salvo, who avenged last week’s 4-6 first round defeat to #3 Emilee Garvin.
Trailing the entire set, Salvo buckled down and broke Garvin’s serve in the 10th game to even the set at 5-5.
Salvo continued to put on the pressure and was the aggressor in the next two games, completing a 7-5 comeback win and propelling the Lady Minutemen to a 4-2 lead.
Salvo’s determination and focus was indicative of the mindset the rest of her teammates had today, each producing better, more resolved tennis than last week.
Top to bottom, the team was on a mission, and it showed.
Though the final score was the same as last week’s matchup that could have gone either way, the outcome of this match felt more secure, as each set won was won by a larger margin and nearly each set lost was lost by a closer margin.
The Lady Minutemen came to play today.
#1 singles ace, Stella Hsieh, paced a solid outing by the singles corps, that went 7-2.
Hsieh played a relentless and aggressive brand of tennis that netted her her fourth triple bagel of the season (6-0, 6-0, 6-0).
#2 Audrey Loh and Salvo each won 2 of 3 sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 and 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 respectively.
Doubles went 4-5 and was led by a sweep from #1 Amanda Yee/Kasey McCoy (6-3, 6-1, 6-0), who continue to improve as a unit.
#2 Riley McCoy/Stella Chen secured doubles’ other point with a 6-0 win over the #3’s (4-6, 2-6, 6-0).
#3 Esmee Eaton/Helena Chen continue to make great strides and are knocking on the door of their first victory together, which almost happened today (0-6, 5-7, 6-3). They are on the cusp.
Up next: The Lady Minutemen will face off with first-place Geffen UCLA (3-0 in league) on Thursday.
