Football:

It must be a lot of fun to be part of the 2021 Monrovia High School football team.

So far, the Wildcats are 5-0, and that includes Friday night’s 36-17 victory at San Dimas.

Monrovia took a 21-10 lead into the break, and the Saints, who rely almost solely on their run game, could not mount anything that resembled a comeback.

Aside from the winning, it’s also the ability of the Wildcats offense to score at any moment and from anywhere on the field that makes watching them so exciting.

You couldn’t blame anyone from the SDHS side if they had nightmares of Noah Rodriguez and Carlos Hernandez late Friday night.

Rodriguez connected with Hernandez 14 times through the air for 240 yards.

And that includes four TD’s.

Hernandez had touchdown catches of 65, 22, 13 and 18 yards.

Hernandez now has an area-best 12 TD catches through the first five games.

The Monrovia junior began the week tied for most TD catches with Pasadena senior Mehki Fox, and the Bulldogs are off this week.

Rodriguez completed 22 of  his 31 pass attempts for just under 400 yards.

Jesse Samec and Shawn D’Amato combined for 190 yards rushing for San Dimas.

Samec’s 8-yard TD run in the first quarter gave SDHS its first and only lead of the game at 7-6.

Up next: Monrovia and San Dimas will both be in action next Friday.

The Wildcats open Rio Hondo League play at La Canada, and the Saints host Don Lugo in a nonleague contest.

Quotable:

Monrovia quarterback, Noah Rodriguez: “I knew I had to come and perform well and that every possession will be key. We came out passing the ball and man it’s just hard to stop when you have a bunch of guys who can get open and make plays. I had success tonight in finding the open guy and allowing them to make plays. The win was very important, because a lot of people didn’t know wh0 would win tonight and we used that as motivation. We are playing well, but we’re committed to getting better every day and that’s what makes this team special.”

Monrovia receiver, Carlos Hernandez: “Coming into the game, we knew we had to stop the run. Once we established that, it was easy from there, Our offense was delivering. I just do what I do, which is make plays for my team, Noah Rodriguez and I connected all night and had four touchdowns. This win made a big statement about us, and that we’re not to be taken easily or soft. We’re always going to fight and win. Winning this game also made a good start for league. Now we are 5-0 and heading into league, which will be a breeze.”
