Girls Athlete of the Week:

If the Arcadia High School girls volleyball program wins the Pacific League title, they’ll probably look back to this past week as the spark.

The Apaches (7-0 in league) began the week with a three-game sweep at Burbank.

Fast forward 48 hours and Arcadia trailed visiting Crescenta Valley, 14-6, in the fifth and final set.

The Apaches clutched up big time and won 12 of the last 14 points to stun the Falcons.

AHS won by scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 22-25 and 18-16.

Chayse Hoon had five kills and four blocks on Tuesday, but the Apaches’ junior saved her best for last.

Hoon was credited by her coach, Stephen Bernabe, for sparking the dramatic comeback in the five-set victory over Crescenta Valley.

She finished with seven kills and 12 blocks.

Up next: Arcadia will host Burroughs on Tuesday in a battle of the only two unbeatens in Pacific League matches.

Quotable:

Arcadia coach, Stephen Bernabe: “Chayse was instrumental in our 6-14 come back victory this past week. She had a career high 12 blocks with 7 kills and 5 kills with 4 blocks in our three-set sweep against Burbank. Her biggest impact was when we were down, and she had determination in her eyes and a firm belief that we could still win, which spread to the rest of the team. I am very lucky as a coach to have her as a player in my program. She is growing as a player, person and now becoming a leader. I really enjoy watching what she is becoming.”
