Football:
If there was ever a perfect way for new St. Francis coach Dean Herrington to continue the legacy of the late-great Jim Bonds, it couldn’t have been written any better than it was on Friday night.
And don’t get it wrong, Herrington has nothing to prove to anyone.
He’s a multi-time CIF champion and even has a state title to his name.
In his first game leading the Golden Knights, however, St. Francis looked Bonds-esque by outlasting Mira Costa, 44-35, in a back-and-forth thriller.
And it was senior running back Max Garrison who stole the show.
Garrison rushed for 375 yards and scored all six St. Francis touchdowns.
Garrison scored on runs of 74, 24, 9, 18, 36 and 52 yards.
If you wanted to give the star senior a hard time, he actually was on his way to scoring a seventh TD with 1:05 left in the game, but he fell short of the end zone.
Garrison credited his offensive line for opening holes all night and said that Mira Costa was so concerned with St. Francis quarterback Jack Jacob’s ability to pick apart their defense that it led to some advantageous opportunities for him to use his athletic prowess to the Golden Knights’ favor.
If you haven’t seen Max Garrison play live, make sure you do, because he’s a highly-skilled game changer.
They also got a 44-yard field goal from Clint Geryak with one second left in the first half to give St. Francis a 24-14 lead at the break.
Up next: St. Francis will host Damien on Friday.
The Spartans (0-1) are coming off a tough, 16-14, season-opening loss to Loyola on Thursday night.
Quotable:
St. Francis senior, Max Garrison: “It was electric out there tonight. It was a little bit of a different atmosphere than the spring season, because we know we have 10 games to play and the chance of making a playoff run. But the intensity, the effort and the thrill of playing on Friday night’s felt just the same as it did a few months ago. When Mira Costa scored early, no one panicked and we answered back then and all night. I am so proud of the coaches and my teammates, because everyone did their part in the win. I can’t say enough about my offensive line and the job they did tonight. I already told them that I’m going to take them to breakfast one of these days. That’s the least I can do for them. I am really happy that Coach Herrington came in and built relationships with us from day one. I love the guy and want to compete for him. He came in and showed so much respect for Coach Bonds and I know that meant a lot to all of us. He has continued doing what Coach Bonds did and that’s making us feel like we’re cared for as athletes and young men.”
