Boys Basketball:

Layoff? What layoff?

Apparently the 11 days since Damien had last taken the court didn’t affect the Spartans in the slightest.

On June 4, Damien defeated Harvard Westlake, 77-72, in the CIF-SS Open Division finale.

Fast forward to June 15, and the Spartans cruised to a 102-71 victory over visiting St. Joseph (Santa Maria) in the first round of the CIF-State Open Division playoffs.

Malik Thomas definitely didn’t have any rust.

The Damien senior led all scorers with 33 points, including three 3-point baskets.

RJ Smith hit four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points.

Spivey Word contributed 15 points in the win, and he connected on three 3-pointers.

Jincho Rivera led St. Joseph with 15 points and Samuel Bazunga added 14 for the Knights.

Up next: Damien will travel to San Diego on Thursday to take on Torrey Pines.

The Falcons had a first-round bye.
