Boys Basketball:
When is a 102-mile drive each way to the desert and back a good time for a high school kid?
When they come home having earned a spot in the CIF-SS Division 3A semifinals.
Glendora earned a 55-52 victory in overtime at Palm Desert High School.
Ayden Green scored all six of his points in overtime, which accounted for half of the 12 GHS points in the extra period.
The Tartans defense also made a pair of steals in the last two possessions of the game to ice the Aztecs.
Austin Clark and Noah Smith stepped up big in the win.
Clark had 23 points and six rebounds, while Smith added 17 points and seven boards.
GHS fell behind nine points early thanks to a great shooting performance by Palm Desert’s Deandre Sanders, who led all scorers with 31 points.
Sanders would pick up three first-half fouls but didn’t foul out.
Joseph Rojas chipped in with eight points for the Aztecs.
Luke Jacobson contributed seven points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Up next: Glendora will host Citrus Valley in Friday’s semifinal.
The Blackhawks (9-5) defeated Knight, 49-42, in their quarterfinal round contest on Tuesday.
GHS head coach Gordon Hamlow will be making his first trip to the semifinals after 25 years in the business (Baldwin Park, Rowland, San Dimas and Glendora).
Palm Desert showed immense heart and class by observing a moment of silence in their gym for Glendora’s 2020 female scholar athlete of the year, Kerry Welsh, who was killed on Saturday in a car crash.
Welsh was just 18.

I am so proud of the way our kids reacted to adversity and came together. We had so many kids step up and make contributions in the win. Ayden came in for Jack after he fouled out and he just brings so much energy to our team. Even though he’s not that big, he makes things happen inside and he made a couple free throws. I have to believe our league really prepared us well for games like this. We’re really excited to be in this position and play at home on Friday.”
