Girls Basketball:

There is so much that is right about high school sports in Southern California.

But one of the things that needs to be fixed is punishing a small school for its success by moving them up to a division they don’t belong.

And that’s what’s happened to Flintridge Prep.

Kevin Kiyomura and his co-head coach and cousin, Jayme Chan, have ruled the roost in the Prep League.

In fact, they just wrapped up their eighth-consecutive league crown and have won 66 games in a row against Prep League opponents.

But they’re a tiny school and somehow got moved up to CIF-SS Division 1.

And in the first round of the D-1 playoffs, Roosevelt came to La Canada and thumped the Wolves, 68-41.

To further my point, the Mustangs had a rebounding advantage of 83-15.

Jaachi Nwanevu scored 26 points to lead Roosevelt and Sydney Nelson chipped in with 16 points.

Sofia Gonzalez finished her career with 18 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Ashlyn Zhang contributed 17 points and two rebounds.

Prep finished their season 9-1.

  • Editors Note: The opinion in this story is solely that of the writer and no one from Flintridge Prep. I didn’t want to give an impression that Prep was complaining about being stuck in Division 1.
