Baseball:
Bonita did something on Wednesday that only one other program had done in all of 2021.
They defeated the No. 1 ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1 and the Palomares League champions from Ayala.
And they did so with a strong beginning and end.
Ryan Kozma hit a two-run shot in the first inning, and with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, two Bearcats’ runners came in on a Devon Diaz infield hit and a throwing error for the walk-off, 4-3 victory.
It’s Ayala first loss in 55 days.
What made it even more special for the boys from La Verne was that the Bulldogs had just scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Bearcats also snapped Ayala’s 16-game win streak.
Luke Mistone went the distance, allowing three runs on six hits.
He walked two and struck out six Ayala batters.
Jacob Badawi singled twice and drove in a run.
Ty Borgogno went 2-for-3, and Luke Solis walked, singled and scored.
Vinny Hudson tripled and scored.
And Mateo Matthews had an RBI base hit for the Bulldogs.
Andreas Pasillas went six-plus innings and allowed three runs on two hits.
Pasillas walked two and struck out four Bonita batters.
AJ Juarez was stuck with the loss after giving up the game-winning run and two hits over his 2/3 of an inning.
Logan Corthell walked and scored for Bonita and Travis Riggs scored once in the win.
Diaz finished 2-for-4 and scored once.
Up next: Bonita travels to Ayala on Friday to close out the regular season.
