Softball:
When Hailey Yoshida left Westridge after two dominant seasons in the circle (and at the plate), some had to wonder how she’d do in a league with more depth and competition.
And being the competitor that she is, Yoshida would completely understand those doubts.
To make matters even tougher, the school she chose (Alhambra) didn’t begin playing games until aprroximately a month after many SGV area programs.
But from April 19-May 24, big things have happened for the Moors’ junior, and none bigger than today.
Yoshida shut out Almont League-leading Schurr, 1-0, in eight innings.
The Spartans had won 13 consecutive games heading into Monday’s showdown with the Moors, and with one game to go, both programs have one league loss.
Yoshida allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out 18.
Monday’s win also avenged a May 6th loss to Schurr, where Yoshida allowed four runs and got the loss.
In two games against Schurr this season, Yoshida walked three and struck out 29 Spartans’ batters.
Janet Vazquez doubled to account for the Spartans lone base hit on Monday.
Grace Franklin got the loss, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing one run on nine hits.
She didn’t walk anyone and struck out three Alhambra batters.
Priscilla Hernandez singled and scored the game’s lone run when Leilani Rosales drove her home for the 1-0 victory.
Celeste Cortez and Mariah Ruiz had two hits apiece in the win.
The Moors and Spartans split their season series, one game apiece.
