Baseball:
There’s more drama surrounding the Olympic League baseball title chase than many are aware of.
Even with Tuesday’s 6-0 victory at Village Christian, Maranatha holds just a one-half game lead of second-place Valley Christian.
If the Minutemen win out (two more with third-place Village Christian this week, and two next week with last-place Heritage Christian), they will win another league title by one game over the Defenders.
MHS also took the season series with Valley Christian, two games to one, and they very much want the No. 1 seed out of the Olympic League.
So back to Tuesday.
And Daniel Ruiz continues to be nails on the mound as he’s been all year.
Ruiz tossed a two-hit shutout, walked one and struck out 13.
He got the job done with 96 pitches.
Cade Nightingale got the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits over his five innings of work.
He walked four and struck out five MHS batters.
Donovan Gonsal doubled and drove in a pair of runs.
Kade Bowden went 2-for-3, and had two RBIs.
Nick Sartor doubled and scored.
Bryan Richman walked twice, singled and scored.
Mikey Ebner walked three times and scored once, and Ryan Mittelman walked and scored.
Dylan Zdunek singled and scored in the win.
Up next: Maranatha will host Village Christian on Thursday.
First pitch is set for 3:30.
