Baseball:
It wasn’t a great week for the Glendora baseball program.
The Tartans got swept in a pair of Palomares League games with Bonita on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
In fact, Glendora didn’t score in either game.
But with the glass half-full mentality, they did pick up a 3-1 victory on Saturday over a Long Beach Poly program that entered the game with a 16-4 record.
And the Tartans somehow found a way to grind out a win despite being out-hit, 6-2.
Ryan Skjonsby got the start for Long Beach Poly and went five innings.
He allowed two runs on one hit and walked three batters.
Matthew Moreno and Troy Estrada walked in the bottom of the third inning and both came home on Jeff Isenhart’s double.
Elias Torres pitched the sixth inning and Braydon Wooldridge’s two-out single scored Matt Gonzales to extend the GHS lead to 3-1.
Josh VerKuilen went the first five innings and he allowed just an unearned run on three hits.
He walked one and struck out four Jackrabbits’ batters to earn the win.
Michael Moses came in and went two scoreless innings to secure the save.
But he did make things exciting.
In the sixth inning, and leading 2-1, Poly had runners on second and third with two outs and Moses got a strikeout to escape the danger.
The Jackrabbits had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh.
But Moses was able to coax a one-hopper to second, which Matt Gonzales fielded and flipped the ball to his buddy, Johnnie Valdez, who made the force out to end the game.
Troy Criss walked and had an RBI single and Edgar Rosales went 2-for-4 in the loss.
Up next: Glendora will host Ayala on Wednesday in the first of two with the Bulldogs.
