Baseball:

What a difference a week made for Edrian Rangel.

Seven days ago, Rangel struck out 12 batters in a 3-1 loss to Claremont.

Fast forward one week, and Rangel went 6 2/3 scoreless innings and Bonita edged Glendora, 1-0, in a Palomares League showdown.

Rangel allowed five hits, walked one and struck out 10.

Approaching the 110-pitch count, Luke Mistone came in with runners on first and second with two outs and he was able to coax a fly out to center to close out the Tartans.

The win gives Bonita a one-game lead over both Claremont and GHS for that much coveted No. 2 spot in the Palomares League standings.

It also guarantees the Bearcats a series win after picking up their second victory over the Tartans in as many tries.

Braydon Wooldridge, Matt Gonzales, Michael Moses, Jeff Isenhart and Shane Mion singled one time each for GHS.

On the other end was a guy who pitched well enough to win.

Johnnie Valdez went all six innings and allowed just one run on two hits, but the Tartans’ senior was saddled with the loss.

Aiden Caron reached base on an infield single, stole second, got to third on a passed ball or wild pitch.

And then Devon Diaz singled him home in the bottom of the third for the game’s only run.

Valdez got through his six-inning outing with an economical 62 pitches.

Up next: Bonita and Luke Mistone will go for the three-game season sweep on Friday at GHS.

Quotable:

Bonita pitcher, Edrian Rangel: “It’s a pretty big win, because this is the race for second place. It would be really difficult for anyone to catch Ayala, so any time you beat Glendora or Claremont, you’re getting closer to where we want to be. Today was a good win to get after that tough loss last week and Johnny (Valdez) pitched really well for Glendora. I felt like I had all four of my pitches working well for me today. I used my slider as my out-pitch, but I had pretty good command all day and was able to keep their batters off-balance for most of the game. I knew I was getting close to the 110-pitch count and didn’t see anyone warming up, but when I saw Luke coming in, I felt really confident he would get the final out. And he did. We’d obviously like to get the season sweep on Friday and if that happens, we’ll have to get some early runs and get into their bullpen. Today felt like one of those days where the first team to score would win and that’s what happened.”
