Boys Athletes of the Week:
The nicest way of putting it is that Charter Oak wasn’t heading into Valle Vista League play this past week on the highest of notes.
The Chargers had lost three in a row and five of their last six games when Covina visited on Wednesday for the VVL opener.
But good pitching can change things for the better, and it can do so in a hurry.
And that’s exactly what Zack Bauer and Chris Ceballos did.
Wednesday: Charter Oak 12, Covina 0
In the Chargers’ Valle Vista League opener, Zack Bauer set the tone for the week.
Bauer threw a one-hit shutout in a 12-0 victory over the Colts.
He walked two and struck out six.
It took Bauer just 80 pitches to seal the deal.
Bauer also had an RBI base hit in the win.
Chris Ceballos singled, doubled and scored twice.
Friday: Charter Oak 13, Covina 1
Chris Ceballos would finish off the two-game Valle Vista League sweep of Covina with a complete-game effort of his own.
Ceballos surrendered one run on four hits in a 13-1 victory at Covina High School.
He didn’t walk anyone and struck out eight.
At the plate, Ceballos walked twice, singled, doubled, scored two runs and had two RBIs.
Bauer walked three times and scored a run for the Chargers.
